Agitation at RU Rokeya Hall Continues
Provost, asstt proctor kept confined to office for 6 hrs
Students of Begum Rokeya Hall of Rajshahi University (RU) kept the hall provost and an assistant proctor confined to provost's office for six hours on Wednesday night to press their five-point demand.
Early Tuesday, a hall security guard was seen on the second floor of the female dormitory while eight mobile phone sets, Tk 5,000 and valuable ornaments were stolen from different rooms of the female students' dormitory the same night.
Following students' agitation, the RU authorities suspended hall guard Rezaul Haque on charge of stealing and issued a stand-release order against two hall superintendents for negligence of duty.
The female students of Rokeya Hall on Wednesday night met hall Provost Prof Sayeeda Akter and Assistant Proctor Zannatul Ferdous at the provost's office and asked for legal action against the suspended hall guard.
They also demanded meeting of their five-point demand including immediate legal action against the responsible hall security guards, hall superintendents, compensation for stolen items, withdrawal of law enforcers from the hall gate and ensuring female students' security inside the hall.
As the provost and the assistant proctor refused to take any legal action against the hall guard, the agitating students confined them inside the provost's office at 9:00pm.
Around two hundred female students also staged sit-in in front of the office.
After six hours, RU Proctor Prof Chowdhury Zakaria along with several senior teachers went to the hall and persuaded the students to free the provost and the assistant proctor by assuring legal action against the guard and outsiders.
