Dyke collapse floods 30 villages in Khulna

Thirty villages of Koira upazila have been inundated as Pobna dyke in Maharajpur Union collapsed Monday evening due to high tide. Several thousand people of Koira Sadar, Maharajpur, Maheshwaripur, South Bedkashi and North Bedkashi unions have been marooned as the affected villages of these unions are still under three to four feet high saline water, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Arif Pasha. He said the dyke at Mathbaria village collapsed as it failed to stand pressure of high tide at 12 points, causing untold sufferings to the people who were earlier rendered homeless due to May 25 Cyclonic Aila followed by tidal surge. Meanwhile, Aila affected people of Koira upazila have demanded adequate deep tube wells to meet severe crisis of pure drinking water. They have also alleged irregularities in distributing relief goods among the cyclone victims by most of UP chairmen and members. Farida Begum, wife of Saifullah Gazi of Koira Sadar Union alleged that she had received nothing but some rice from relief centre only once while chairman Shahabuddin distributed maximum relief goods among his favourites. Shukmoni of Maharajpur Union complained that she did not get relief as yet despite several attempts since May 28. Mamata Das, wife of Radha Ranjan Das, said water-borne diseases, including diarrhoea and dysentry have broken out in epidemic form among Aila affected people of Koira Sadar Union where there is no medical team to provide medicare services.
