Ex-MP Ilyas Ali, 47 others granted bail

A Sylhet court on Monday granted bail to former lawmaker and Sylhet distrct BNP convener M Ilyas Ali and 47 others in a case filed on charge of snatching ballot papers. Additional chief judicial magistrate Md Habibur Rahman Bhuiyan granted the bail prayer following a High Court directive. Several ballot papers stamped with sheaf of paddy seal were recovered from a paddy field behind Ashuganj Sarkari Primary School in Biswanath upazila a day after the last parliamentary polls. Police filed a case against 200 BNP men including Ilyas Ali and some UP chairmen on charge of snatching those from government officials. As police filed charge sheet against 48, the accused appeared before the High Court which granted them interim bail. A bench comprising justice Md. Abdul Wahab Miah and justice Marziul Haque on April 28 ordered the accused to appear before the court concerned in eight weeks as they prayed for bail extension. The other accused include Biswanath upazila parishad vice-chairman Gous Khan, Ilyas Ali's younger brother-Askir Ali and UP chairmen-Shamsuzzaman Shamsu, Rajab Ali and Kabir Hossain Dhola Miah.
