One killed as AL rivals clash

One person was killed and 10 others were injured in a clash Monday between two rival factions of Awami League (AL) at village Dighi in Shalikha upazila. Fakhrul Islam, 35, of Dighi village succumbed to injuries at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. A brother killed his younger sister at village Umrakanda Palahar in Nandail Upazila Monday morning. Police said, Majeda Khatun, 45, daughter of Abdul Hye, was hit by Sayed Hossain with a sharp weapon following an altercation over land property. Armed muggers stabbed a businessman and looted Tk two lakh and a mobile phone set from him at Beanibazar yesterday. Victim Bablu is brother of the owner of a garment store at Al-Amin Market. He was attacked on the second floor of the market in the morning. The criminals knived him and fled away with the cash and mobile set leaving him unconscious for some time. Cadres of Bangladesh Chattra League (BCL) Panchhari upazila unit yesterday beat up a local journalist at Muslimpara. AHM Faruq, district correspondent of Dainik Inqilab was attacked by the BCL cadres led by upazila BCL unit President Nikhil Chowdhury following publication of a report on May 7 in the daily on illegal toll collection by the BCL men in Panchhari. An army petrol team led by a captain rescued Faruq and handed him over to police to send him to district headquarters under security. Around 200 students of Gobra Mitra College yesterday blocked Narail-Khulna Road for over eight hours demanding punishment to the bus workers who beat up a college student and threw him out of a bus at Agdiar Char. Runover by the bus, Liton Biswas, an HSC student of Gobra Mitra College later succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital. Following the incident, agitated students blocked road by felling trees and staged sit-in on the road demanding punishment to killers. At least 60 villagers were injured in a series of clashes between the people of two villages in Tungipara from Monday afternoon to early morning yesterday. Police batoned the clashing groups at Nilofa Bazar and opened fire to bring the situation under control. Several injured have been admitted to different clinics for treatment. Tungipara police said Helal Mollah of neighbouring Mushli village came to mechanic Abu Darda at Nilofa Bazar Monday to get an electric fan repaired. At a stage of altercation they scuffled over the triffle issue. Following the incident, the people of village Kushli, armed with different types of weapons, attacked Nilofa Bazar at around 4:45 pm. Police rescued trader Hasan Ali,50, and arrested two abductors from Paka Char area under Shibganj upazila Monday morning. The arrestees are Shahjahan Sheikh,25, son of Ekramul Haque of Kata Para and Shafiqul Islam,45, son of late Kaimur Rahman of Dobhagi under Shibganj upazila. The officer-in-charge of Shibganj police station said, Hasan, a manpower businessman from Badda area in Dhaka, was abducted on June 11 and kept at a house in Paka Char area. Later, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of Tk 1,50,000 for his release. Hasan's son Ashraful Kabir Mithu later came to Chapainawabganj from Dhaka and informed police about the matter. He also lodged a case against the two kidnappers.
