Both the factions later called protest meetings at AL office at the bazar at the same time. Apprehending fresh clash between the two factions, upazila administration imposed Section 144 in the area. Internal feud in the local Awami League surfaced in January this year over nomination of a candidate for Kurigram-3 parliamentary seat. According to sources, AL acting president Saidul Islam Bachchu and General Secretary Partha Sarathi Sarker supported AL-led grand alliance candidate Maidul Islam Mukul while former upazila AL president Abdul Majid Hari and former general secretary Golam Hossain Montu worked for rebel AL candidate Fulu Sarker in the parliamentary election. Since then the two factions has been trying to dominate the local party politics and other activities in the upazila. Upazila Parishad Chairman M Kafil Uddin, who belongs to Saidul and Bachchu faction, took a move to settle the dispute between the two factions over supply of materials to the schools. But his initiative yielded no positive results due to strong opposition by Golam Hossen Montu, leader of the another faction.
