Pro-AL factions in Sonagazi clash for supremacy
At least five people were injured as the supporters of Sonagazi upazila chairman and vice chairman in Feni clashed over establishing supremacy in the area on Saturday night.
Sonagazi Upazila Parishad Chairman Kamrul Anam and Vice-Chairman Mahmud Hossain Noman belong to the ruling Awami League.
Police and witnesses said Anam and Noman groups locked in a clash at the upazila headquarters at around 9:00pm, leaving Feni district Chhatra League Publicity Secretary Deen Mohammad, 27, Sonagazi pourasava Chhatra League Secretary Sakhawat Hossain Rana, 25, Sarwar Jahan Babul, 26, Arif, 28 and Babu, 27, injured.
Police rushed to the spot, dispersed the clashing groups and brought the situation under control.
Tension is prevailing among the leaders and workers of the local Awami League as both sides flexed muscles at upazila headquarters throughout the day yesterday.
Deen Mohammad, a supporter of chairman Anam, alleged that vice-chairman has occupied a room at local dak Bungalow. When he was asked to vacate the room for local AL office, he became angry and asked his supporters to chase the chairmen's men.
He further said the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) has allotted the room for AL office following an application filed by the chairman group. |Vice chairman Mahmud Hossain Noman could not be reached despite repeated attempts.
