UNO assaulted in Moulvibazar

Rajnagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) was manhandled and his office room damaged allegedly by the supporters of upazila chairman yesterday. Sources said a group of people led by Shamsuddin, brother of Upazila Chairman Misbahudozza Bhelai Miah, entered the office of UNO Shafayat Mahbub Chowdhury at about noon and manhandled him over formation of a committee on the government water bodies of the upazila. The attackers also damaged the doors and windows of the UNO office and ransacked files and papers. Upazila Chairman Bhelai Miah is also the president of Rajnagar Upazila Awami League (AL). Hearing the news, another group of local AL took position against the chairman supporters in front of the upazila parishad office. Police later controlled the situation. However, Bhelai Miah said he knew nothing about the incident. Abdul Alim Mahmud, Moulvibazar superintendent of police (SP), said the police were investigating the matter. Mofizul Islam, Moulvibazar deputy Commissioner (DC), said legal action would be taken against those who are responsible for the incident.
