Teesta Swells Due to Heavy Rain

5,000 marooned in two upazilas

At least 5,000 people have been marooned in Teesta chars and the low lying areas of Dimla and Jaldhaka upazila as the water level in the river market a rise due to heavy rainfall in the upstream. According to Water Development Board control room at Dalia in Nilphamari, the river was flowing 5cm above the danger mark at 6:30pm yesterday. With the rise of water level in the Teesta, its tributaries including Charal Kata, Deunai, Buri Teesta, Buri Khora, Jamuneswary and Panga have also swelled, inundating newly transplanted aman fields. The affected areas are Purba Kharibari, Char Kharibari, Kisamot Chhatnai, Dohol Para, Baishpukur, Bhasanir Char, Fakrater Char, Jharsingerswar and Vendabari in Dimla upazila and Bhavan Char and Gopal Jhar in Jaldhaka upazila. The executive engineer of BWDB Dalia division said they have asked the people residing near the Teesta Barrage to move to safer places.
