3 killed on Dhaka-Barishal highway accident

Another victim undergoing treatment with injuries

Three people were killed and another injured as a covered van collided with a battery-powered three-wheeler in Madaripur Sadar upazila today.

The incident occurred at around 11:30am on the Dhaka-Barishal highway near Tatibazar in Mostafapur union, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mostafapur Highway Police Station Mamun Ar Rashid told The Daily Star.

The deceased were identified as Kohinur, 35, Taslima, 46 -- both residents of the Khamarbari area in Madaripur Sadar -- and the van driver Nayan Hawladar, 22, of Panthapara area in Dasar upazila of the district.

The injured, identified as Roni Khan, 33, is currently receiving treatment at Madaripur Sadar Hospital in critical condition.

Quoting locals, the OC said a covered van collided head-on with a battery-powered van, leaving two passengers of the latter dead on the spot. Two other victims were rescued in critical condition and taken to Madaripur Sadar Hospital, where one of them died while undergoing treatment.

On information, police visited the spot.

Following the incident, agitated locals staged a protest by setting tyres on fire on the highway, halting traffic movement for nearly two hours. The protest was later withdrawn following police intervention.

“Legal action is underway in this connection,” the OC added.
