Four killed as two buses collide on Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway
Four people were killed and at least a dozen others injured in a head-on collision between two buses in Lohagara upazila of Chattogram this morning, police said.
The deceased were identified as Rehena Begum, 60, of Patiya Upazila in Chattogram; Naimur Rahman Jihad, 21, and Naim, 22, from Jhenaidah; and Monir, 24, from Bhola.
The accident occurred around 11:15am in Chunati area on Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway, said Md Salauddin Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Dohajari Highway Police Station.
According to police, a Cox’s Bazar-bound bus of Marsa Paribahan collided head-on with another Chattogram-bound bus of the same operator, leaving Rehena dead on the spot.
At least six injured passengers were taken to Lohagara Upazila Health Complex, where three more passengers succumbed to their injuries later, said Dohajari Highway Police Sub-Inspector Abdus Sattar.
Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Iqbal Hossain, of the health complex, also confirmed that one woman was brought dead while three others died while undergoing treatment.
Among the injured, four were referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMHC), he said.
Police sources said that many of the injured were receiving treatment in CMCH and private hospitals, while some of them are in critical condition.
A police official from Lohagara Police Station said police and fire service personnel conducted the rescue operation after the accident.
