Four members of a family suffered severe burn injuries after an explosion, suspected to have been caused by accumulated gas, ripped through a house in Narayanganj’s Fatullah early today.

The injured were identified as Abdul Kader, 50, and his three sons -- Mehedi, 17, Sakib, 16, and his twin Rakib, 16.

They were admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in critical condition.

Shawon Bin Rahman, residential surgeon at the emergency department of the burn institute, said Abdul Kader suffered burns to 57 percent of his body, while Mehedi suffered burns to 18 percent, Sakib 17 percent, and Rakib 25 percent.

He added that Mehedi and Rakib also suffered burn injuries to their airways.

“All four are in critical condition and are undergoing treatment at the institute,” the doctor said.

The explosion occurred around 6:30am in the Kutubpur Rakhibazar area beside Shibu Market in Fatullah.

Md Faruk, a neighbour who helped rescue the victims and take them to hospital, said Abdul Kader lived in the rented ground-floor house with his wife and three sons.

“A loud explosion shook the area in the morning, waking the neighbours. We rushed to the house and saw its doors and windows blown apart. One by one, the injured family members came out of the room with burn injuries,” he said.

Faruk said the blast might have been caused by gas accumulated from a leak inside the house or possibly by a refrigerator compressor, although the exact cause could not be confirmed immediately.

At the time of the explosion, Abdul Kader and his three sons were asleep inside the room, while their mother had stepped outside to collect water for cooking. She survived the incident unhurt.

Abdul Kader hails from Matlab upazila in Chandpur and works as a battery-run autorickshaw driver.
