Rail link between Dhaka and northern Bangladesh snapped following derailment
A Panchagarh-bound intercity train of Ekota Express derailed near the Ishwardi Bypass Railway Station of Pabna this afternoon, halting rail services between Dhaka and the northern districts.
Pakshi Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Abu Hena Mostafa Alam said the Panchagarh-bound train from Dhaka derailed at Majhgram area at around 4:00pm.
A derailed carriage disrupted movement on the route.
A railway relief train arrived at the site and began recovery operations around 6:00pm.
Leaving the derailed carriage behind, the Ekota Express departed the spot at about 5:00pm. The rescue work is expected to be completed and normal train movement restored by 7:00pm, the rail official said.
Due to the derailment, rail communication on the route connecting Dhaka and northern districts remains suspended, leaving several trains stranded at various stations.
The official said train movement would resume shortly via a diversion.
"Dhaka-bound and North Bengal-bound trains will be diverted to the Ishwardi railway junction, instead of the Ishwardi Bypass station, allowing them to proceed to their destinations," he said.
