Road accidents kill five, injure eight in Jashore, Natore
At least five people, including three of a family, were killed and eight others injured in separate road accidents in Jashore and Natore today.
In Bagherpara upazila of Jashore, a man, his son and four-year-old granddaughter were killed after their private car crashed into a tree on the Jashore–Magura highway early today.
The deceased were identified as Abdul Majid Sardar, 65, his son Mahmud Hasan Zakaria Joni, 42, and Joni’s daughter, Seherish. They were residents of Fatehabad village in Monirampur upazila, said Alamgir Kabir, officer-in-charge of Barobazar Highway Police Station.
Police said the family was returning home to Monirampur from a relative’s house in Chuadanga. Around 3:30am, the driver lost control of the vehicle in the Gaidghat area, causing it to crash into a roadside banyan tree.
Police and fire service personnel rescued the victims and took them to Jashore General Hospital.
Among the injured are Joni’s mother, wife and another son, who have been referred to Dhaka. Legal proceedings are underway, police said.
In a separate incident in Lalpur upazila of Natore, at least two people were killed and five others injured when a sand-laden truck hit a battery-run auto-rickshaw this morning.
The deceased were identified as Md Monir and Md Babul, both passengers of the auto-rickshaw, said Md Mojibar Rahman, officer-in-charge of Lalpur Police Station.
The accident occurred on the Ishwardi–Rajshahi highway in Nabinagar area around 7:30am when the truck, heading towards Rajshahi, collided with the oncoming auto-rickshaw, the OC said.
Seven passengers were critically injured in the crash; two later died at Lalpur Upazila Health Complex.
Five injured passengers have been shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Police have seized the vehicle, although the driver fled the scene.
The death toll may rise as several injured remain in critical condition, the OC added.
