Two killed as truck crashes through bridge railing, falls into river in Jhenaidah
A truck driver and his helper were killed after the vehicle carrying pulses broke through a bridge railing and plunged into a river in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah early today.
The accident occurred around 1:00am on the Jhenaidah–Kushtia highway at the old Borodah Bridge in the Garagonj Bazar area.
The deceased were identified as truck driver Sohel Sheikh, 27, son of Abul Kalam Sheikh of Gazamanikunda village in Pabna Sadar upazila, and helper Mubarak Hossain, 20, son of Jafar Mia of the same village.
Abdus Salam, deputy assistant director of Jhenaidah Fire Service and Civil Defence, said that a truck loaded with pulses was travelling from Jashore to Kushtia at night.
"When it reached near the old Baradah Bridge, the truck lost control, broke through the bridge's guardrail and plunged into the Kumar river," he said.
"Upon receiving the news at night, one unit from Jhenaidah and two units from Shailkupa rushed to the spot. I myself was present at the scene throughout the night," he added.
After working throughout the night, the body of helper Mubarak Hossain was recovered at dawn, while the body of driver Sohel Sheikh was recovered around 8:00am. Fire service personnel also retrieved the truck.
After learning of the incident, Jhenaidah District Commissioner Abdullah Al Masud visited the accident site.
