A 60-year-old woman was killed and a police officer critically injured in two separate road accidents in Kaliganj, Gazipur.

The first incident occurred last night in the Chuariakhola area of Tumulia Union.

Juhura Begum, a resident of Amdia Belaid area in Narsingdi district, was hit by a CNG-run auto-rickshaw while returning from Gazipur Safari Park.

She was rushed to a hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead, said Sub-Inspector Riadul Islam of Madhabdi Police Station. He added that the auto-rickshaw was seized, and police are trying to identify and detain the driver, who had fled the scene.

The second accident took place around 7:30am on today in the Nalchata area on the Tongi–Ghorashal road. Police Constable Md. Nazmul Hossain, 32, who serves at Kaliganj Police Station and drives a police van, was struck by a speeding bus operated by Ena Paribahan.

According to Zakir Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Kaliganj Police Station, Nazmul had returned to the barracks after completing an overnight patrol and realised his wallet was missing. He went back to the Nalchata area on a motorcycle to search for it when the bus hit him.

Fellow officers rushed him to the Central Police Hospital in Rajarbagh, Dhaka, where he was reported in critical condition. His right leg was severely crushed and nearly severed, the OC said.

Efforts are ongoing to identify the bus involved, and legal action will be taken, he added.
