Mohammad Jahangir Alam, suspended mayor of Gazipur City Corporation, this afternoon submitted his nomination papers to run for mayor as an independent.

He also submitted nomination papers for his mother, Zaida Khatun, who too would be running for mayor.

Jahangir submitted the nomination papers at the returning officer's office in Gazipur city after 3:00pm, our correspondent there reports.

The election is scheduled for May 25. Today is the last date for submission of the nomination papers.

Jahangir was sworn in as GCC mayor on July 27, 2018. He was expelled from the Awami League on November 19, 2021, after a video clip of him went viral.

Seven days after his expulsion from the party, he was suspended from the GCC mayor post on November 25.

The AL later withdrew his expulsion order.

Meanwhile, AL-backed candidate Md Ajmat Ullah Khan submitted his nomination paper around noon today.

"The election must be fair and peaceful and participation of the people will be ensured in the polls," he said after filing his nomination to Returning Officer Faridul Islam.

Mawlana Ataur Rahman, senior joint secretary general of Islami Andolon's central committee, also submitted his nomination papers.

He went to the returning officer's office around 1:15pm.

The BNP has not nominated any for the polls. But Shah Nur Islam Rony, son of BNP leader Nurul Islam Sarkar, submitted his nomination paper.

Nurul Islam Sarker is a condemned convict in the case filed for the killing Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master.
