5 injured in Shibir-JCD clash in Narayanganj

At least five people were injured in clashes between activists of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) in Narayanganj city this afternoon.

The violence broke out around 12:15pm on Allama Iqbal Road beside Government Tolaram College in Chashara following a programme marking July Mass Uprising Day, said Additional Superintendent of Police (DB) Md Hasinuzzaman.

According to police and witnesses, tensions escalated during the programme after leaders of the rival student organisations allegedly made provocative remarks against each other. The confrontation later spilled onto Allama Iqbal Road, triggering chase and counter-chase and clashes in the Chashara area.

Police dispersed the rival groups and brought the situation under control about an hour and a half later.

Hasinuzzaman said four to five people were injured.

Shibir's Narayanganj city president, Amit Hasan, alleged that JCD activists attacked Shibir members inside the college, leaving three of its leaders injured. He said they were receiving treatment at Narayanganj 300-bed Hospital.

JCD's Tolaram College unit president, Monir Hossain Zia, rejected the allegation, claiming that Shibir activists launched the first attack after JCD members protested against their speeches. He said two JCD activists injured in the clashes were undergoing treatment at Narayanganj General Hospital.

Police said no one had been detained or arrested.

"We will analyse CCTV footage and take legal action against those involved in the violence," Hasinuzzaman said.

After the clashes, Shibir activists left the area following police intervention. JCD activists, joined by members of Jubo Dal, later brought out processions carrying sticks in several parts of the city, including College Road, Jamtola, Chashara and Kalirbazar.
