Green chilli imports resume through Hili Land Port

Imports of green chillies from India through the Hili Land Port in Dinajpur resumed this afternoon after nearly nine months, following the government’s decision to allow imports to stabilise prices in the domestic market.

Four trucks entered Bangladesh around 4:30pm ferrying the first consignment, said Md Uzzal Hossain, sub-assistant plant quarantine officer at the Plant Quarantine Station of Hili Land Port.

Govt permits green chilli imports to cool prices

He said three importers -- Mokka Impex, Raj Enterprise, and Mahadi Enterprise -- brought in a total of 29.44 tonnes of green chillies in the first shipment.

According to the quarantine official, the government has so far granted permits to 69 companies to import a total of 29,710 tonnes of green chillies from India.

Traders said the approval came after retail prices of green chillies rose sharply in local markets. Importers and traders expect the fresh supplies to help stabilise the market if shipments continue in the coming days.
