BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today called upon students and people in general to unite for "another mass uprising", like that of 1990, to oust the current government.

"Students and people overthrew the then dictatorial government through a mass uprising in 1990. Our leader Begum Khaleda Zia led the movement. Now, we need such a mass uprising again," said Fakhrul.

The BNP secretary general was addressing an event at Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka, marking the death anniversary of Chhatra Dal leader Naziruddin Jihad, who was killed during the movement against the Ershad regime in 1990.

BNP's Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman virtually joined the programme as chief guest from London.

Urging students to unite, Fakhrul said they (current government) will have to go for the sake of a fair election conducted by an unbiased Election Commission, under a completely neutral caretaker government.

Fakhrul said, "Ousting the current government, we will be able to free our party chief Khaleda Zia and bring back Tarique Rahman home from abroad through the election under a neutral government."
