Decision to hold polls, referendum on same day may trigger political crisis: Jamaat
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has said the decision to hold the national election and the referendum on the same day has failed to fulfil the aspirations of the people and could trigger a new political crisis.
In an immediate reaction to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus's address to the nation, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar said the announcement "ignored the people's demand".
"By announcing the national election and the referendum on the same day, the government has ignored the people's demand. We want to make it very clear that this announcement has not fulfilled the aspirations of the people," Porwar told reporters at a press conference at the party's central office in Dhaka's Moghbazar around 4:00pm today.
He added that the decision could lead to a new political crisis.
Porwar said Jamaat's Executive Council would meet in the evening to discuss the issue further.
