Shafiqur earns Tk 3.6 lakh a yr from farming

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman declared an annual income of Tk 3.6 lakh, all from agriculture.

According to his last tax statement, the net worth of his wealth is Tk 1.5 crore, and he holds Tk 60.8 lakh in cash, and has current savings worth TK 4.9 lakh.

Shafiqur, who holds an MBBS degree, has shares worth Tk 27.2 lakh, and 10 bhoris of gold whose value was shown at Tk 1 lakh. The price of gold today ranges from Tk 1,52,857 to Tk 2,24,182 per bhori depending on the carat.

He has 241.77 decimals of land worth Tk 20.25 lakh and a duplex house worth Tk 27 lakh.

Shafiqur, 67, paid Tk 30,000 in taxes last year.

The Jamaat chief, who is running from Dhaka-15, will spend Tk 35 lakh in electioneering. Of this, Tk 10 lakh will come from his savings, and the rest from the party fund.

He still faces one case under the Anti-Terrorism Act and another for "unlawful assembly" -- both filed in 2013 and both stayed by the High Court.

In total, he had at least 34 cases filed against him between 2008 and 2022. Only two of these cases were disposed of before August 5, 2024. He has since been acquitted in 7 cases and exonerated in 16, while eight cases were withdrawn.

At least 15 of his cases were related to "unlawful assembly," breaching "public safety" and rioting. Six other cases were filed under Explosive Substances Act, one under Arms Act and one related to alleged corruption.
