‘You opposed the Liberation War, don’t oppose election now’
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today blamed the interim government for Bangladesh's ongoing political crisis, accusing it of deepening divisions instead of resolving them.
Speaking at a programme at the Jatiya Press Club this afternoon, Fakhrul said members of the Consensus Commission had released their report without including BNP's notes of dissent.
Referring to Jamaat-e-Islami, Fakhrul urged the party to respect the people's demand for a fair vote. "You opposed the Liberation War in 1971; please don't stand against the people's right to an election now," he said.
The BNP leader warned that those who act against the will of the people will be rejected. "The people of this country never forgive betrayal. Step away from that path. Participate in the election, and let the people's right be restored through their votes -- that's what we all want," he said.
Reiterating his party's stance, Fakhrul said the BNP wants the proposed referendum to be held on the same day as the national election. "Those who are now creating chaos on the streets have misled the people time and again," he added.
