The additional superintendent of police of Hathazari Circle of CMP was injured while trying to control a tense situation that erupted between local Jamaat and BNP activists at the Chittagong University (CU) main gate over the Cucsu election on Wednesday night.

The injured officer, Kazi Tarek Aziz, received primary treatment at the CU Medical Centre and was later sent to the Dampara Police Lines Hospital for better treatment.

Till the filing of this report at around 1:00am today, supporters of both BNP and Jamaat were still positioned at CU Gate No 1.

According to police and local sources, supporters of BNP and Jamaat took to the streets, blocking the main road leading to the CU entrance and triggering tension around 9:40pm. The standoff prompted police to intervene while vote counting was still underway.

To quell the situation, Additional SP Kazi Tarek Aziz and his team rushed to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control. At one point, the situation escalated as both groups began hurling brickbats.

Speaking to The Daily Star, the injured officer said, "We were trying to disperse both groups by talking to them, but suddenly one group started throwing brickbats at us, leaving me injured in the head."
