DMP to take legal action against drivers ignoring traffic case notices
Dhaka Metropolitan Police has begun taking legal steps, including issuing summonses or arrest warrants, against vehicle owners and drivers who ignore traffic case notices, using CCTV and video footage as evidence, according to a notice.
Signed by Acting DMP Commissioner Md Sarwar, the notice said the DMP has begun filing traffic cases against motorists violating traffic rules using CCTV and video footage, with case notices being sent by post through an e-traffic prosecution software system.
It said traffic violations in Dhaka are being recorded through video footage and still images, and notices are sent to the registered addresses of vehicle owners or drivers as part of efforts to ease congestion and modernise traffic management.
After receiving a notice, owners or drivers are required to appear at the DMP headquarters or the relevant traffic division and pay the prescribed fines to settle the cases. If they fail to do so, legal steps, including summonses or arrest warrants, may be initiated through special metropolitan magistrates of the DMP.
The notice also warned against engaging in any financial transactions or sharing personal information with individuals claiming to collect fines, saying fraudsters may try to demand money in the name of CCTV-based traffic cases. It urged residents to report such incidents to the nearest police station or traffic division.
DMP said AI-based CCTV cameras with Road Transport Act 2018 violation detection software have recently been installed at key intersections and other important locations across the city.
Using footage from these cameras, digital prosecutions are being carried out for offences such as jumping red lights, crossing stop lines, wrong-way driving, illegal passenger pickup, obstruction, illegal parking and blocking left lanes.
