A mild to moderate cold wave continues to sweep across four northern districts -- Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, Nilphamari and Kurigram -- affecting daily life.

Panchagarh’s Tetulia recorded the country’s lowest temperature for the fifth consecutive day, with the mercury dropping to 7.5 degrees Celsius at 9:00am this morning.

Wind speeds ranged between eight and 10 kilometres per hour, while humidity stood at 91 percent, said Jitendranath Ray, acting officer of the Tetulia Weather Observatory.

According to the observatory, Tetulia previously recorded 8.4 degrees Celsius yesterday, 7.3 degrees on Sunday, 8.3 degrees on Saturday and 6.8 degrees on Friday.

In other parts of the region, temperatures were recorded at 9.2 degrees Celsius in Thakurgaon, 10 degrees in Nilphamari’s Dimla and 9.6 degrees in Kurigram’s Rajarhat in the morning.

Despite the cold spell, people received some respite as bright sunshine appeared in the morning, allowing outdoor work to resume after several days.

Meteorological officials said icy winds from the Himalayan region, coupled with nearly clear skies, were intensifying the cold in northern districts, including Panchagarh and Thakurgaon. The weather is expected to remain unchanged over the next few days.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, temperatures between eight and 10 degrees Celsius are classified as a mild cold wave, six to eight degrees as a moderate cold wave, and below six degrees as a severe cold wave.

Meanwhile, hospitals in the affected districts have reported an increase in patients, particularly children and elderly people suffering from cold-related ailments.

Agriculture officials advised farmers to take precautionary measures to protect crops, especially boro seedbeds, which have already been affected in some areas.
