“War crimes trial and failure of our politics,” published on October 4, 2013 Hafeejul Alam Hats off to Mahfuz Anam for presenting us with a masterpiece about the war crimes trial and vindictive politics prevailing in Bangladesh. The country is now at a critical juncture, politically and otherwise. People are now desperately hoping that the government and the opposition would refrain from committing any further blunder that may plunge the country into darkness. Let the nation be united behind the war crimes trial and keep the ideals of our Liberation War above narrow politics. Nds BNP has very cunningly as well as with unprecedented ingenuity invented a plea against the ongoing trial of war criminals of not maintaining “international standard.” The underlying message of the plea is not difficult to understand. Dev Saha We as a nation have never been true to our principles. Bangabandhu got surrounded by mainly opportunists except a very few genuine followers. Why was that softness towards the well-known criminals? Why have we failed to prosecute criminals when the wound was fresh and burning? Akm Bari I must congratulate Mr. Anam for writing this piece. Finally he recognised that without Sheikh Hasina being the prime minister, these war criminals would not have been tried and convicted. Salim Ullah It's a shame for us that after 42 years of independence, we still could not mould ourselves to be united on some particular national issues that have enormously frustrated us. S. Ahmad The greatest problem for us, the Bangladeshi people, is that we don't or perhaps can't speak straight and to the point respecting facts.
