All shops at Dhaka's New Market remained closed today after persistent heavy rainfall caused severe waterlogging in the area, forcing authorities to suspend electricity as a safety precaution.

The closure was confirmed by Bangladesh Dokan Malik Samiti President Helal Uddin, who said no businesses had opened since the morning due to flooding caused by overnight rain.

"Continuous rainfall since Saturday night has left the entire New Market area waterlogged. As a result, all business activities have remained suspended, and there are virtually no customers in the market," he said.

Helal Uddin added that the Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) has temporarily disconnected electricity to the market to prevent accidents amid the flooding.

According to him, a decision on reopening the market will be taken on Monday, depending on whether the situation improves.
