With the air communications already snapped, Sylhet got disconnected from the rest of the country by rail yesterday. The divisional district is now at risk of getting isolated by road within a day or two if the flood situation deteriorates further.

The flood in the Sylhet division has deteriorated dramatically in the past 24 hours, with the situation heading towards the most devastating in recent memory.

Due to the flooding of water at Kumargaon 133/32 KV grid sub-station in Sylhet, power lines were cut off all over Sylhet from 12:30 pm today (June 18, 2022).

Health Minister Zahid Maleque today (June 18, 2022) said a total of 140 medical teams were formed for the treatment of flood affected people across the country.

The flood situation in Sylhet, Sunamganj, and Netrokona districts may further deteriorate in the next 24 hours, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre's latest bulletin.

"I was on the ground floor. After the water entered, I came to the balcony of the first floor along with other patients. There is no electricity. Candles are being used. I don't know how to get treatment,” said 58-year-old Farooq Ahmed, who was admitted to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

More than 72 percent of Sylhet division is under water. Out of four districts in Sylhet division – 89 percent area of Sunamganj, 72 percent of Sylhet, 70 percent of Habiganj, and 50 percent of Moulvibazar was submerged.

Rail communications with Mohanganj station in Netrokona have been cut off from the rest of the country after parts of the railway bridge were washed away in the floodwaters, said Mymensingh Rail Station Superintendent Jahangir Alam.

A total of 55.2 mm rainfall was recorded in Moulvibazar in the last 24 hours. In urban areas, the flood water decreased slightly today (June 18, 2022) as compared to yesterday, but at least 40 villages of the district remain waterlogged due to incessant rain.

The flood situation in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts is becoming more severe with time as more than 40 lakh people remain marooned in different upazilas and towns while other areas are on verge of being inundated.

Bangladesh Army has launched toll-free numbers to help the flood-affected people in Sunamganj and Sylhet, said an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release.

Sufferings of the people in Sylhet division is not going to end soon as rivers will continue to swell in the next three days before starting to recede. So, the flood situation in the region will prevail for at least seven more days, meteorologists said.
