Water levels at 11 points in 9 rivers above danger mark in Barishal division

Water levels at 11 points in nine rivers across Barishal division are flowing above the danger mark, with the highest recorded at 80 centimetres above the mark, according to Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) data until this afternoon.

Tajul Islam, sub-assistant engineer of BWDB Barishal, said the Surma-Meghna river at Tazumuddin was flowing 80cm above the danger mark. At Daulatkhan in Bhola, the Surma-Meghna was 47cm above, while the Kirtonkhola in Barishal was 9cm above, the Bishkhali-Sugandha in Jhalokathi 9cm, the Tentulia at Bhola Kheya Ghat 11cm, and the Baleswar in Pirojpur 21cm above the danger mark.

Other river points above the danger mark include the Bishkhali-Khakdon at Barguna, 27cm above; the Bishkhali at Patharghata, 23cm; the Payra-Shrimonto at Mirzaganj, 12cm; the Bishkhali at Betagi in Barguna, 23cm; and the Kocha at Umedpur in Pirojpur, 21cm above the danger mark.

At Amtali, the water level of the Payra-Buriswar river was exactly at the danger mark.

Tajul said water levels are rising abnormally due to the full moon tide and a low-pressure system.

“As a result, water levels in several major rivers in the southern region, including the Meghna, are flowing above the danger mark,” he added.
