Have a rethink of Rampal power plant
The High Court on September 6 cleared the way for setting up the Rampal power plant near the world's largest mangrove forest, the Sundarbans. We came to know from new reports that the Indian power company, which was entrusted with setting up a controversial power plant at Rampal near the Sundarbans, had failed to implement a similar project in India for not getting permission by the government of India. Bangladesh Environment Lawyers' Association (BELA) said that the project had been approved by violating several international environmental rules. The National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports, which conducted a long march towards Rampal, said besides harming the Sundarbans, the power plant would cause huge financial loss for Bangladesh. Energy commission should rethink and come out of its adamant mentality to execute the project.
