Irrational demand of polytechnic students

Tashrif Billah, Dhaka
A few days ago, rowdy polytechnic students took to the streets and engaged in vandalism in support of their two-point demand. On tacit approval of their demands from the government, they stopped their violent activities temporarily. Students enroll in four-year diploma courses after their SSC examination from science, commerce, or arts groups. Those courses stress practical work and not theoretical knowledge. On the contrary, B.Sc. engineering is a four-year course covering all theoretical, practical, and research-related knowledge complying with international standard. Students enroll here after completing their SSC and HSC examinations from science group only. So, the diploma students are obviously not equally qualified. Ironically, they are seeking rank and privileges equivalent to those of a BSc engineer. If their demands are accepted, an era of disparity will begin in engineering profession. Products of engineering work like construction, designing, and transmission will then be in a mess. This irrational and unacceptable trend must be nipped in the bud.
