DMP to deploy 18,000 personnel on Awami League's founding anniversary
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will deploy over 18,000 officers and personnel across Dhaka on June 23 to maintain law and order and ensure security on the founding anniversary of Awami League, whose activities remain banned.
According to a DMP press release issued on Sunday, extensive security measures have been taken to prevent any untoward incident and maintain public order in Dhaka.
Police will set up special pickets and checkpoints at more than 200 strategic locations across the city, while security checks at all entry points to Dhaka will be strengthened to prevent outsiders or suspicious individuals from creating disorder.
DMP’s specialised units, including the Detective Branch (DB) and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, will remain deployed throughout the day. The Special Branch (SB) and Internal Affairs Division (IAD) will also conduct intelligence operations in plain clothes to detect and prevent acts of sabotage or conspiracy in advance.
To respond quickly to emergencies, 15 Quick Response Teams (QRTs) will be kept on standby at different locations across the city, while additional reserve forces will remain ready at four major control rooms. The press release said the DMP commissioner and other senior police officials will directly supervise security operations in the field.
Police also highlighted recent anti-crime drives in Dhaka. Between June 1 and June 20, DMP arrested 82 people in political cases and 28 others allegedly preparing for flash processions. During the same period, police arrested 121 people in theft cases, 113 in banditry cases, and 120 in robbery cases. DMP’s police stations, DB, and CTTC units also arrested 55 people on extortion charges, including four listed extortionists.
