A woman allegedly killed her daughter before hanging herself following a family quarrel in Tangail’s Mirzapur upazila on today.

The deceased are Konika Begum, 25, of Jhurjhuria village in Dhamrai upazila, and her daughter, Razia, 4.

Police and locals said Konika married Rajib Hossain, of Dhupuria village in Mirzapur six years ago. According to sources, Rajib was a drug addict and a vagrant, and quarrels often broke out over the family’s financial hardships and his failure to provide for his wife and children. Konika also reportedly had frequent disputes with her in-laws.

Last night, Rajib left home following an argument with Konika and did not return. This morning, Konika went out with Razia to go to her father’s house. Her father-in-law, Nazim Uddin, brought them back home.

Around 10:00am, Konika was found hanging from the ceiling of a room, while Razia was found lying dead on the bed.

On information, a team from Mirzapur Police Station went to the scene, recovered the bodies and sent them to Tangail General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Abdullah Al Mamun, officer-in-charge of Mirzapur Police Station, told The Daily Star that police believed Konika suffocated Razia to death using a pillow before hanging herself.

“The incident is being investigated,” he said.
