National Citizen Party (NCP) Dhaka Metropolitan North unit member secretary Sardar Amirul Islam has resigned, accusing the party of leaning towards right-wing politics.

NCP expelled him on Monday on charges of breaching party discipline.

In a Facebook post on Sunday afternoon, Sarder Amirul Islam wrote “It is no longer possible for me to remain associated with the party.”

Meanwhile, NCP announced in a statement around 1:45pm today that former Dhaka University student Sadia Farzana had been appointed acting member secretary of the Dhaka Metropolitan North unit.

NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossen and Spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain confirmed the matter.

NCP Senior Joint Convener and Dhaka Metropolitan North Convener Ariful Islam Adeeb said Amirul had been served an internal show-cause notice on March 3 over allegations of breaching party discipline.

“Questions were raised over his performance of duties in the metropolitan unit during the election period, but he could not give a proper answer,” Ariful said.

However, Amirul denied the allegations of breaching party discipline and financial irregularities.

He told The Daily Star that he had objected to the party’s alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami during the election.
