Speaker sets April 5 for debate on July Charter implementation motion
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad today set April 5 for discussion on the adjournment motion regarding implementation of the July Charter.
This is the second discussion on the adjournment motion in the six days of this parliament. And in total, the fifth such motion discussed in the House in 53 years, according to the speaker.
Ruling party lawmaker Zainul Abedin Farroque placed an adjournment motion in parliament to discuss implementation of the July National Charter. Speaker Hafiz Uddin accepted the motion and set two hours on April 5 for debate.
Announcing the acceptance, the speaker said, “This marks a rare precedent in Bangladesh’s parliamentary history. In 53 years, this is the first time an adjournment motion brought by a member from the treasury bench has been accepted for discussion.”
On March 29 , Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman submitted an adjournment motion regarding convening the Constitutional Reform Council. That motion was debated in parliament on Tuesday, but no resolution was reached.
The opposition staged a walkout today, protesting the lack of redress and alleging that another adjournment motion was introduced to overshadow theirs.
Later, Zainul Abedin formally introduced his new adjournment motion in the House. He said, “After 17 years of sacrifice and struggles, under the leadership of the BNP, the July-August revolution produced the ‘July National Charter’. This is our roadmap for the future.
“It is crucial that the parliament adjourn its current business to hold a detailed discussion on how the ‘July National Charter 2025’ will be implemented. I seek permission to move this motion.”
Earlier, on March 30, independent MP Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Iqbal had also submitted an adjournment motion on the implementation of the July National Charter, though no decision has yet been announced.
