The parliament has expressed deep sorrow at the death of former acting president of Bangladesh and speaker Muhammad Jamiruddin Sircar, suspending its regular business today to honour his memory.

This afternoon, a discussion was held in parliament on Jamiruddin’s life and contributions. Following the discussion, members observed one minute of silence and offered prayers.

The day’s sitting began with the question-and-answer session and a standing committee report on a bill before the House moved to the memorial discussion. Jamiruddin, an eminent lawyer and veteran BNP leader, died early today.

Participating in the discussion, Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Jamiruddin rose through merit and was immensely popular among his constituents. He recalled Jamiruddin’s shift from leftist politics in his student life to joining JAGODAL and later the BNP under President Ziaur Rahman, noting his steadfast loyalty to liberal democratic ideals.

Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman described Jamiruddin as successful both professionally and politically, saying he often defended oppressed politicians in court and kept parliament lively as Speaker.

BNP MP Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain praised him as a distinguished lawyer and politician, while Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said Jamiruddin was a gentleman against whom no allegations were ever heard throughout his long career.

BNP MP Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Jamaat-e-Islami MP Nazibur Rahman, and NCP MP Akhter Hossen also joined the discussion.

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad told the House, “The nation has lost a great politician, jurist, and a man of pure heart. I watched him conduct the House with great skill. He was a man of such integrity that I never heard a single complaint against him. The nation has lost a noble son.”
