Farhan Bin Liaquat

Notre Dame Debating Club recently arranged the 7th Debater's League, 2nd School Mix Up and Invitational 2014. Held at the college premises, this was an 11-day long event. NDDC is the first club to hold three different tournaments back to back from three different stages of the debating system. The League and Mix Up both feature Bangla debates. On the other hand, Invitational is an English debate tournament. Accomplished debaters from DU, JU, BUET, IUT, VNC participated in the League, where the teams were formed through a debater auction. Eight debaters -- Raaj Kishore Biswas, Tawhidul Islam Shaibal, Omor Faruq Fahim from Dhaka University; Mahdi Habib, Ehsanul Haq Nirjhor, Rakibul Islam, Unaiza Mannan from BUET; and Munia Islam Mozumder from Jahangirnagar University -- acted as team managers of as many teams and bid for three debaters. Thirty debaters from schools such as Ideal, St. Gregory's, Viqarunnisa Noon etc. participated in the School Mix Up. Only invitees are allowed to participate and only the best were invited. The Invitational brought the top 36 school and university level English debaters together where they formed teams through the debaters' auction.
The event started on June 18 with the 7th Debater's League Auction. After three base rounds and semi-finals and grand finale, Team Popeye (featuring Raisul Arafat Riyad from DMC, Ahmad Rashiq Faiyaz from BUET and Mirajul Islam from NDDC) came out victorious and Team Jerry (Sifat Ahmed Khan from DU, Mahfuzul Hoq from IUT and Omar Raad from NDC) became the runner-up and that was the curtain call for the 7th Debaters' League. Sifat Ahmed Khan of Team Jerry was declared the Debater of the Tournament. From June 22 to 25, the 2nd School Mix Up was held. Two teams came out on top -- Team 1 and Team-9 -- after three knock-out rounds. After a very exciting final, Team-1 (Shinchon and Nisat from VNS, Rizwan Fahim from ISC) became the champion and Team-9 (Oishee from VNS, Antor from MGBS and Marzana from MMHS) was named the runner-up. Sumaiya Oishee was declared the Best Speaker of the final.
Finally, on June 26, the Invitational started off with the debater auction and 12 teams were formed. Asif Newaz (NSU) was named the Chief Adjudicator. Aaquib Farhan Hossain (BRACU), Ratib Ali (BRACU) and Tanzim Haq Tanmoy (NSU) were the Deputy-Chief Adjudicators. Team Blue's Clues (Wasifa Noshin from IBA, Sajid Khandaker from DT and Sreyan Kanungo from ESS) became the champion and Team KJ (Ahmed Shafquat Hassan from LCLS(S), Syed Rakin Ahmed from AKS and Shaimul Reza from NDC) became the runner-up after five preliminary rounds and grand finale and with that on June 28, the curtains came down on the whole tournament. Wasifa Noshin from IBA (DU) was named the Best ICON Debater and the Best Debater of the tournament, while Rakin Ahmed from Aga Khan School was named the Best School Debater.
