Retiring the concept of retirement

Recently Dr. Yunus said the word 'retirement' should be sent to retirement. (The Prothom Alo, 15th June) He stated this in a recent seminar of the elderly persons at Hyderabad in India. What I could sense from his statement is that a person should not stop working on ground of seniority but one should work as long as he/she can. If someone remains detached from work for a long time, he/she may suffer from both mental and physical disorder.
Dr. Yunus's statement may create new strength and hope in the minds of many elderly people in Bangladesh and also beyond. One more thing, I must stress the need of working opportunities for many elderly but active persons who are often denied the entry in the job market. There are elderly persons whose contribution may be great for the country. After all, depth of experience is always important.
