National consensus crucial to address Rohingya crisis: Law minister
Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman today said international cooperation and national consensus are crucial to finding a permanent solution to the Rohingya crisis.
“The Rohingya crisis should not be viewed solely from a security perspective; it also involves humanitarian, social, diplomatic and international law-related concerns. Alongside safeguarding Bangladesh’s security and stability, it is equally important to ensure the humanitarian and fundamental rights of the Rohingya,” he said.
He made the remarks at a discussion titled “Rohingya Crisis: Current Reality and Future Course of Action”, organised by the Neeti Gabeshona Centre (Policy Research Centre) at Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.
He stressed the need to create conditions for the Rohingya to return to Myanmar safely, voluntarily and with dignity, urging the international community to take coordinated and effective action.
Asaduzzaman also called for stronger public awareness and consensus on the issue, and urged researchers, experts, civil society and the media to contribute constructively.
Neeti Gabeshona Centre’s Executive Director Dr Shafiqul Ahmed, former Bangladesh Ambassador to Myanmar Mohammad Sufiur Rahman, Neeti Gabeshona Centre’s trustee Prof SK Toufiq M Hossain, and Rohingya women’s rights activist Razia Sultana, among others, spoke at the occasion.
