5 Kinds of Jokes Played Out in Most Sitcoms
MIGHT AS WELL BE A HAMSTER
“HE'S BEHIND ME RIGHT NOW, ISN'T HE?”
This is supposed to be funny. A character, usually a dumb male, would be badmouthing a person (usually a snobby female) and that person would turn up, standing behind him. And then when all damage is done, the character would “realise” the person had listened to it all. That he's in big trouble now. Well, I laughed when it happened in Friends with Joey and Chandler but I was a kid who laughed at anything and it was Friends.
THE GENIUS/NERD/SOCIALLY AWKWARD GUY NOT KNOWING HOW TO 'ROMANCE'
It seems like it's fashionable nowadays to have someone with Asperger's or something in the cast and be funny by making him or her try to be “sociable”. Was Sheldon and Amy counter-proposing one another on whether they should kiss or just snuggle really funny? Maybe. But it isn't always. Yes, the awkward situations we get to see spring from these circumstances can be hilarious, but by now it's been overdone, and I personally don't find it funny anymore when I see these played out.
THE LADY-KILLER ON HIS MISSION
From Joey to—God help us—Barney Stinson, I say we've had enough womanisers in sitcoms. Watching them go about doing deranged things and making up pointless lists, diagrams and rules on how to “score” gets sort of tedious after a while, rather than being funny, especially if you're binge-watching shows.
SOMEONE SAYING GIBBERISH AND YOU'RE BORED BECAUSE YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND AT ALL WHAT THE PERSON'S SAYING
Usually, the character actually does spew nonsense, and the other character shoddily shows us how bored he/she is. This happens far too often than it should. I fast forward when a scene like this comes up.
THE RICH DUMB BLONDE
She'll have to be extremely stupid and clumsy and almost all the laugh tracks would seem to be dedicated to her antics. Even brilliant shows like the new Tina Fey produced “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” has one. I don't have anything against blondes, but I think it is unfair to redheads and brunettes and girls with various other types of hair. They should get dumb roles too. They too should be made to say, “Lol. What's that? Oh, silly me, it's just me in the mirror. Wait, what filter is the mirror showing me in?”
