'Biggest upset I can remember in Australia': Mark Waugh hails Bangladesh win
Bangladesh’s historic nine-wicket victory over Australia in Darwin has left former Australia batter Mark Waugh reaching for superlatives, calling it potentially the biggest upset he can remember on home soil.
It was Bangladesh’s first-ever Test win in Australia, ending a 23-year wait to play a Test on Australian soil.
“This could possibly be the biggest upset I can remember in Australia,” Waugh said on Fox Cricket.
Waugh compared Bangladesh’s triumph with the West Indies’ famous victory at the Gabba a few years ago, but felt the circumstances in Darwin made the Tigers’ achievement even more remarkable.
“The West Indies beat Australia at the Gabba three or four years ago. That was an upset,” he said.
“But this one, given their best two bowlers, Nahid Rana and Shoriful Islam, are not playing, the rankings, the Australian team is back at full strength, it’s a big one, this one.”
Bangladesh arrived in Darwin as overwhelming underdogs and had been bowled out for just 54 in the second innings of their tour match against a Cricket Australia XI.
They responded by bowling Australia out for 198 on the opening day, scoring 426 themselves and eventually completing a nine-wicket victory on the fourth day.
