Tanzid, Shanto steer Tigers to strong position at lunch
Bangladesh will be delighted to head into lunch having lost only one wicket in the opening session of the second day of the first Test against Australia at Marrara Stadium in Darwin on Friday.
The Tigers reached 181 for two at the interval, trailing by just 17 runs, with opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim unbeaten on 74 off 144 balls. His composed innings includes six fours and a six.
Najmul Hossain Shanto, meanwhile, was unbeaten on 26 off 35 balls, having struck three boundaries. The Bangladesh captain adopted a proactive approach after Mominul Haque's dismissal for 49.
Tanzid and Shanto have added 43 runs for the third wicket, keeping Bangladesh firmly in control after Australia were bowled out for 198 on the opening day.
Mominul falls for 49 after 102-run stand with Tanzid
Mominul Haque was dismissed for 49 after edging Josh Hazlewood to wicketkeeper Alex Carey, ending a 102-run second-wicket partnership with Tanzid Hasan Tamim on the second day of the first Test against Australia at Marrara Stadium in Darwin on Friday.
Bangladesh are 138 for two in their first innings, trailing Australia by 60 runs in the crucial opening session.
Tanzid, playing only his second Test, brought up his maiden Test fifty off 102 balls, while the partnership with Mominul had taken Bangladesh from 36 for one.
He later brought up the 100-run partnership -- the first in the match so far -- by using his feet to drive Beau Webster uppishly through the off side for six, leaving Pat Cummins and teammates frustrated.
The partnership spanned 189 balls and helped Bangladesh negotiate a testing spell from Mitchell Starc, who repeatedly found the right channels and went past the outside edge, but the Bangladesh batters maintained their composure.
Earlier on Day 1, Bangladesh bowled out the hosts for 198 and ended 96 for one at stumps.
