Tewatia does the trick after Gill’s smooth 67
It was turning out to be a Shubman Gill masterclass but in the end it needed the finishing touch from Rahul Tewatia as Gujarat Titans sealed victory in the penultimate delivery of the innings to defeat Punjab Titans by six wickets.
Wriddhiman Saha got 30 off 19 at the top with Gill looking in supreme touch in chase of Punjab's 153 for 8. After Gujarat skipper Hardik Pandya fell cheaply, along with David Miller, Gill put on 42 for the fourth wicket. Gill's tremendous six of Kagiso Rabada and then Miller helping one on through fine-leg in the same over, the 18th which produced 12 runs, got them to touching distance. With 7 needed in the final over, an incredible stop at cover by Rishi Dhawan stopped a certain boundary against Miller. Next ball, Sam Curran left Gill's stumps cartwheeling after a smooth 49-ball 67 and it appeared the game was still on.
Tewatia coolly feigned to move towards leg-stump and then walked across towards the off side to scoop the fifth delivery of the final over for four to seal victory with Miller unbeaten at the other end on 17 from 18 deliveries. Earlier, it was another paltry total for Punjab with Matthew Short's 24-ball 36 being the highlight as they scored 153.
Gill pointed to Tewatia's skills at the death despite being disappointed not to finish off the chase.
"The wicket got tougher towards the end. It was difficult to score boundaries at will. It was important for us to run hard and get those boundaries. I feel I should have finished the match but I feel Rahul Tewatia and Kings XI is a love-story. In these types of games there is definitely pressure on both teams. But it's important to keep getting those singles and not have dot balls," he said at post-match ceremony.
The Gujarat skipper said his team perhaps needs to take more risks in the middle-overs.
"To be very honest, I would not appreciate the game to go this close from the situation we were in. There was definitely a lot for us to learn from this game. That's the beauty of sports, it's never over till it's over. So we will go back to the drawing board. I think we can take a couple more risks in the middle overs," Pandya said.
