Hundreds of football fans brought out a colourful procession in Old Dhaka today -- marking the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 -- carrying jerseys, musical instruments, and flags of various football-playing nations.

Starting at 5:00pm from Laxmibazar, the procession moved through Johnson Road, Bahadur Shah Park, Koltabazar, Ray Saheb Bazar, and Tantibazar before returning to the starting point. Football theme songs echoed across the streets as people waved flags of Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and Saudi Arabia.

For local youth, FIFA World Cup brings a unique atmosphere to the historic quarters of Dhaka.

“During the World Cup, Old Dhaka feels different,” said Kaushik Roy, a college student and Argentina supporter. “Even though we support different teams, football brings us together.”

Kaushik, who described Argentina as his "first love", expressed hope for another victory. "After years of getting trolled and sacrifices, we won the World Cup in in 2022. We want to win this time too."

Mohammad Sohel, a local businessman and Brazil supporter, said, "I am optimistic that Brazil will win the World Cup this time around. Neymar deserves the title."

Organisers have been holding the procession since 2010, turning it into a festival that Old Dhaka residents look forward to every four years.

Awlad Hossain Antu, one of the organisers, said supporters travelled from distant areas to join the event, although rain slightly affected the turnout.
