Ashfaq earned the honour for his feature titled 'Test cricket: A relic that refuses to perish', published on April 2, 2024. Firoz won the photography award for a picture published on February 8, 2024, with the article 'SAFF U-19 Women's C'ship', which captured Bangladesh players tossing Mosammat Sagorika in the air after being declared joint champions with India following a coin toss at the Birshrestha Shaheed Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur. The Daily Star's sub-editor Sazzad Hossain Mukul, formerly of Desh Rupantor, also won a runner-up award in the same category. Despite being a sports writer, he won the award for capturing a poignant picture of street children enjoying sports during the Covid-19 pandemic.
At the same event, T Sports senior journalist Rifat Masud was named Sports Journalist of the Year 2024, winning the Tawfiq Aziz Khan Trophy and a cheque of Tk 1 lakh. Rifat topped the independent judges' panel, while Dhaka Post's senior sports reporter Arafat Zubaear and ATN News senior reporter Badiuzzaman Milon were named first runners-up in the category.
Presided over by BSPA president Rezwan Uz Zaman, the awards were handed over by MAX Group chairman and Bangladesh Swimming Federation senior vice-president Engineer Golam Mohammad Alamgir. Sponsored by MAX Group, the BSPA organised the awards for the 10th consecutive year, recognising sports journalists across eight categories.
Awards were also presented in exclusive report, series report, interview, feature/documentary and sports photography categories across print, online and electronic media. Two senior sports writers -- Md Anwar Ullah and Parveen Nasima Nahar Putul -- were honoured on the occasion marking World Sports Journalists Day.
Expressing his gratitude, Rifat said the recognition would inspire him to work harder, while Alamgir reaffirmed MAX Group's continued support for BSPA. BSPA leaders also reiterated their commitment to improving the standards of sports journalism in the country.
