Rakib reaches Commonwealth Games boxing quarterfinals

Bangladesh boxer Rakib Hossain advanced to the quarterfinals of the men's 55kg event at the Commonwealth Games after recording his second successive victory in Glasgow on Sunday.

Rakib cruised to a unanimous 5-0 points victory over Papua New Guinea's Michael Inoino in the round of 16 to book a place in the last eight, where he will face Australia's Jay Dixon on Tuesday.

The win followed another convincing performance in the opening round, where Rakib defeated Solomon Islands' Tetekana Clinton.

While Rakib kept Bangladesh's boxing campaign on track, it was another disappointing day in the swimming pool.

Sonia Akter finished last in her heat of the women's 100m freestyle, clocking 1 minute, 7.70 seconds — well outside her personal best of 1:05.05. She was placed 61st overall among 64 competitors.

Sukumar Rajbanshi also fell short of his previous best in the men's 50m backstroke. He completed the race in 30.90 seconds, slower than his personal best of 29.92, finishing second in his heat and 44th overall out of 58 swimmers.
