Bangladesh have won the toss and elected to bat first against West Indies in the third and final T20I at the Providence Stadium in Guyana today.

Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim Iqbal’s T20I future has continued to fuel rumours with BCB’s cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus today telling the media that the information is due soon.

“We’ll be positive about playing the full match,” said Bangladesh T20I captain Mahmudullah Riyad today ahead of the third and final T20I against the West Indies in Guyana, a game (scheduled for BST 11:30 pm, Thursday) that is likely to be rain-affected. The Tigers skipper, whose side are 1-0 down in the series, replied to questions from reporters regarding the problem areas his team are looking to address with the series-deciding encounter and the World Cup in sight.  

Bangladesh have been fined 20 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against the West Indies in the second T20I in Dominica.

Mustafizur Rahman is one of Bangladesh cricket’s chief assets in T20 cricket due to his vast experience in franchise cricket. The 35-run defeat against West Indies in the second of the three-match T20I series at Guyana has however raised questions regarding Fizz’s performance.

Contrasting half-centuries by Rovman Powell and Brandon King highlighted a formidable West Indies batting effort on the way to a 35-run victory over Bangladesh in the second T20 international in Dominica on Sunday.

Losing wickets at inopportune moments once again led to Bangladesh’s downfall. Shakib Al Hasan played a lone hand, scoring a fifty and writing his name in the record books but his innings came in vain as Windies clinched the second T20I at Dominica by 35 runs. With the victory, Windies take a 1-0 lead before the third and final T20I on July 7.

Bangladesh brought in pacer Taskin Ahmed in place of spinner Nasum Ahmed but did not find enough bite in the surface as Windies batters, in particular opener Brandon King and Rovman Powell put him to the sword. Shoriful Islam and Mustafizur Rahman fared better in the end overs but Windies put on a very challenging score of 193 for five.

Following batting debacles which led to a  whitewash in the Test series against the West Indies, Bangladesh batting coach Jamie Siddons has shifted his focus towards the limited-overs formats as the Tigers prepare to take on the hosts in a three-match T20I series, starting on Saturday. 

Bangladesh’s lack of Test culture has created a buzz in the media recently. Head coach Russell Domingo has spoken numerous times about creating such a culture since taking the reins, but the issue keeps coming to the fore, especially after disastrous losses.
