Bangladeshi film “Jaya Aar Sharmin” has been selected for the feature film competition at the fifth World Film Festival Kolkata, set to take place at Nandan in Kolkata from September 8 to 13.

Ayra Tahreem Khan, daughter of singer-actor Tahsan Rahman Khan and actor Rafiath Rashid Mithila, has made her acting debut. Her first on-screen appearance came in a television commercial released on Saturday, where she starred alongside her mother. Directed by Piplu R Khan, the ad promotes the cosmetic brand Himalaya Purifying Neem Face Wash, for which both mother and daughter now serve as brand ambassadors.

National Film Award-winning actress Jaya Ahsan, known for her stellar performances across both Bangladeshi and Indian Bengali cinema, is set to return to the silver screen with her new film “Jaya Aar Sharmin”, releasing on May 16. Directed by Piplu R Khan, the film was shot during the pandemic.

Local cinemas have been awaiting welcoming new releases, from the beginning of the new year. Continuing this momentum, two government-funded films are hitting theatres nationwide today.

In a joint statement, the assembled artistes addressed the recent turmoil, saying, "We have taken down the dictator through a bloody mass uprising led by the students of our country. We deeply remember the martyred who were brutally killed by Sheikh Hasina's regime. It's very unfortunate that we are yet to get the identification of many and have a confirmed number of the people who have lost their lives."

Government grant for the 2023-2024 fiscal year has been announced today by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
