Who was Shakib trying to impress?
The reckless way in which Shakib batted in the first ODI against Sri Lanka begs a question which, though abhorrent in its implications, may well be valid under the circumstances: Was he really playing for his country or was he playing to impress the IPL franchisees in order to bump his price in future IPL auctions? There is nothing wrong for a cricketer to try to maximise his earnings -- in fact, no one will be prouder than I if Shakib (or any Bangladeshi cricketer for that matter) fetches Rs. 10 crores or more in future auctions. But our cricketers must realise that the country comes first and everything else (overseas contracts, personal stats etc.) must come second. On several matches, I have seen accomplished overseas batsmen, batting in the 90s, got out while trying to hit boundaries because the situation demanded it.
