BNP leader shot dead in Daulatpur

BNP leader Iqbal Hossain, 36, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen Monday night near his residence at Maheshwarpasha under Daulatpur thana.

He was talking with some persons when four shots were fired on him, killing him on the spot.

Son of Ghazi Mosharaf Hossain, Iqbal Hossain was a contractor of Khulna City Corporation and Power Development Board.

According to eye witnesses, the alleged killers are rivals in his profession. One of the persons with whom Iqbal was talking to before being shot claimed that the person who fired the shots is an armed cadre of Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP).

According to police, Iqbal Hossain was an armed cadre of outlawed Biplobi Communist Party (BCP) and surrendered with arms in 1999 to take advantage of the general amnesty declared by the then government.

After the change of government, he joined BNP.

No case was filed with police till filing of the report Tuesday night.

His father Mosharaf Hossain alleged that Iqbal had sought protection from Daulatpur police for security of life but they did not take any action. Iqbal received two death threats in the last three months, his relatives said.
